AFCON ’25: Super Eagles ban media access to training

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his decision to restrict media access during training ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash against Mozambique.

Following a three-day lockout on media by the super eagles which drew criticism from the media – some of whom noted that teams like Senegal and Morocco remain more accessible – Chelle addressed the controversy during a Sunday press conference. He clarified that while AFCON regulations only mandate one open session, he had already exceeded this by allowing two weekly sessions.

Chelle emphasized that the “blackout” was a strategic move to minimize distractions and ensure player focus during the knockout stages. “We are here to work, not for a holiday,” he stated, noting that his priority is results over public access. Nigeria faces Mozambique this Monday in a high-stakes match.
