Another Nigerian player suspended for match-fixing

Nigeria’s Super Eagles Shaken as Amas Obasogie Faces Match-Fixing Suspension

The Nigerian football community is reeling following the immediate suspension of Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie by his club, Singida Black Stars SC. The 26-year-old, who served as a second-choice keeper during their bronze-medal run at AFCON 2025, has been handed a three-month ban pending a comprehensive investigation into match-fixing allegations.

The “Howler” Under Scrutiny

The controversy erupted during a Tanzanian Premier League fixture against Namungo FC this past Thursday. Singida Black Stars held a 1-0 lead deep into stoppage time and seemed certain to secure three points. However, the match ended in a draw after Obasogie committed what critics are calling a “suspicious howler.”

The Nigerian international spilled a routine free-kick directly into the path of Namungo’s Fabrice Ngoy, who tapped in the equalizer. This error, coupled with reports of unusual betting patterns flagged during the match, prompted the club’s disciplinary committee to intervene swiftly.

Official Club Action

In a statement issued through the CEO’s office, Singida Black Stars confirmed the disciplinary measures:

“Through the Disciplinary Committee, the leadership of Singida Black Stars SC, has issued a three months to Amas Obasogie to enable for a thorough investigation into match-fixing allegations. The club reminds all staff to uphold the highest levels of integrity and respect for the game.”

Obasogie was not the only player sidelined; teammate and Ugandan international Khalid Aucho also received a three-month suspension. However, the club clarified that Aucho’s ban pertains to “repeated absenteeism and indiscipline” rather than the match-fixing probe.

International Consequences

This suspension is a significant blow to Obasogie’s soaring international career. The former Bendel Insurance standout had recently cemented his status as a key deputy in the national team setup following a successful AFCON campaign in Morocco. With a three-month hiatus ahead, his future involvement with the Super Eagles now remains clouded by the ongoing investigation.
