Why did Ademola Lookman join Atlético Madrid?

Ademola Lookman has opened up about his high-profile move to Atlético Madrid, framing the transfer as a pivotal leap in his professional journey.

For Ademola Lookman, the decision was driven by a desire to test himself within one of Europe’s most rigorous environments. He noted that Atlético’s elite standing in La Liga and their consistent presence in European competition were the primary factors that drew him to the Spanish capital.

Beyond the club’s prestige, the Nigerian international was inspired by the long-term vision and “winning identity” established under Diego Simeone. Following personal discussions with the manager, the winger felt certain that his skill set would thrive within Simeone’s tactical framework.

“It’s a very special club,” Lookman remarked. “I am very aware of Atlético Madrid fans and the passion that they bring to the players, the team and the club.”

While more financially lucrative offers were reportedly on the table, Lookman maintained that his move was fueled by sporting ambition. He emphasized that the chance to compete in La Liga outweighed any monetary incentives, viewing the Metropolitano as the ideal stage to refine his game and contribute to the club’s storied history.
